Questions, answered straight.
The things students actually ask before booking. Don't see yours? Ask directly — you'll hear back from Bill.
Is your training approved for the Maryland Wear & Carry permit?
Yes. The 16-hour initial and 8-hour renewal courses meet or exceed the Maryland State Police training requirements, and you receive the training certificate you need for your MSP application.
Do I need to own a gun to take a class?
Not for the Maryland Wear & Carry courses — gun rental, range fees, and ammunition are included. For Basics of Pistol Shooting, range costs and firearm/ammo are separate; many students arrange a rental at the range.
How long is a Maryland Wear & Carry permit valid?
Initial permits are typically issued for a shorter first term, with longer terms on renewal. Check your permit for the exact expiration and book renewal training about 90 days before that date — if the permit lapses, expect to retake the 16-hour initial course. Confirm current requirements with the Maryland State Police.
Which class do I need — initial or renewal?
If you have never held a Maryland Wear & Carry permit, or yours has expired, you need the 16-hour initial course. If your permit is current, the 8-hour renewal course is what you want.
Where does the live-fire qualification happen?
At approved ranges in Maryland and Virginia — most commonly the AGC range complex in Marriottsville, MD. Exact location is confirmed with your class details.
Is the classroom portion available online?
Yes — Maryland Wear & Carry classroom instruction can be delivered online, in person, or a mix, with the live-fire qualification always in person at the range.
What should I bring to class?
A government-issued photo ID, note-taking material, closed-toe shoes, and a crew-neck shirt for range day. Eye and ear protection are available if you do not have your own. Full packing list is on the blog.
How do I pay?
No payment is due at registration. Once your seat is confirmed you can pay by invoice, Zelle, Venmo, Cash App, or cash — whatever is easiest.
Do you help with the actual permit application?
Every student gets online guidance after class covering the MSP portal, fingerprints, fees, and what to expect during processing. If you would rather have hands-on help completing the application itself, that is available as a separate add-on service — just ask and I will quote it with your class.
Can you support Virginia CHP applicants?
Yes — the NRA Basics of Pistol Shooting course provides the certification commonly used on the Virginia Concealed Handgun Permit pathway.
